FCT Police Commissioner Announces Sweeping Security Operations

In a bold move to restore order in Nigeria's capital, FCT Police Commissioner Ajao Adewale has unveiled an extensive security operation targeting shanties, beggars, and illegal miners across Abuja. The announcement came following a crucial security meeting with FCT minister Nyesom Wike at Life Camp on Tuesday, marking a significant shift in the city's approach to urban management and security.

Decisive Action Against Urban Disorder

The operation, which follows in the footsteps of successful security reforms in other Nigerian states, has already yielded significant results. Over 273 destitute persons have been taken to the Bwari Centre for profiling, while authorities have impounded 670 vehicles for various traffic violations.

Targeting Multiple Security Threats

Commissioner Adewale highlighted several key areas of concern:

  • Proliferation of unauthorized shanties
  • Presence of street beggars and destitute individuals
  • Illegal mining activities
  • Unauthorized IDP camps
  • Traffic-related offenses

This comprehensive approach to urban security mirrors recent community-led initiatives for better governance and order across Nigeria's urban centers.

Addressing Humanitarian Concerns

The commissioner revealed that some individuals have been exploiting humanitarian crises by establishing unauthorized IDP camps. "Such camps are not recognised within the FCT. The places have been identified, and people will be profiled," Adewale stated firmly.

In a move reminiscent of recent federal efforts to strengthen institutional oversight, the operation will ensure proper documentation and processing of all cases.

Community Safety Measures

The commissioner also addressed concerns about "one-chance" robberies, urging residents to exercise caution and use only designated bus stops. The FCT administration is working on improving street lighting to enhance nighttime security.
