ASUU vs Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara: Strike Looms Over Unpaid Dues
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is drawing the line. ASUU Sokoto Zone has threatened an indefinite strike across five state-owned universities in Kebbi, Katsina, and Zamfara. The union demands the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government and ASUU agreement. Zonal Coordinator Professor Abubakar Sabo delivered the ultimatum on Wednesday in Sokoto, making it clear that the era of neglecting Nigerian academics is over.
Why is ASUU threatening an indefinite strike?
Despite the public presentation of the 2025 agreement in January 2026, the governments of Kebbi, Katsina, and Zamfara have offered no positive response. Professor Sabo accused the state governments of bureaucratic delays, inconsistencies, and a blatant lack of willingness to honor the agreement. The ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) held an emergency meeting on June 21 at the Comrade Festus Iyayi Complex in Abuja, where they resolved to take action if their demands remain unmet.
