The Young Nigerian Rights Organization has formally petitioned Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, highlighting alleged systematic oppression and violations of community rights by the Ovie of Mosogar kingdom. This bold move mirrors recent reforms in Nigerian justice systems aimed at protecting citizens' rights.
Economic Justice at Stake
At the heart of the conflict lies the alleged misappropriation of community benefits from corporate agreements. The petition claims that the traditional ruler has bypassed proper channels, forcing companies to sign MOUs directly with the palace instead of the host community, effectively diverting the rightful 60% community share of benefits.
Pattern of Intimidation
Community leaders report a disturbing pattern of harassment and forced silence, highlighting how power dynamics in traditional governance can sometimes work against community interests. Mr. John Odaka, a prominent community advocate, has reportedly faced direct threats for speaking out.
"If petition is written to police, let police come for their investigation. Those things don't push me," stated HRM Sunday Odogun Okpureh, the Ovie of Mosogar, in response to the allegations.
