EastEnders Exodus: 5 Characters Exit As Fans Beg Faves To Stay
Walford is losing five of its own, and the fans are not having it at all. EastEnders has confirmed that five characters are heading out of the square, and viewers are already campaigning to bring them back before they've even packed their bags.
Nigel's Final Goodbye Triggers Mass Exodus
Tonight's episode gave Nigel Bates a proper sendoff, but the ripple effects are real. His wife Julie, played by Karen Henthorn, made it clear she can't stay in Walford without him. She only came down from Scotland to support Nigel through his dementia battle, and now she needs to go back home where the memories live.
And the place I have those memories is back home.
She told Phil Mitchell as much after the funeral, and honestly, who can blame her? Sometimes you have to protect your peace and return to where your heart belongs.
Josh and Clare: Guest Stars Flying Out
Julie's son Josh Sanderson and stepdaughter Clare Bates also returned for the funeral. Clare had previously come back during her father's health struggle, and this time she brought her stepbrother along. But EastEnders bosses have confirmed these are strictly guest appearances. No permanent return, no extended stay. They're out.
Sam and Grant Mitchell Heading Back to Portugal
The Mitchell siblings are also on their way out. Following the dramatic episodes where the family rallied to save Mark Fowler from gangster Russell Delaney, Grant is set to return to Portugal. Sam will suggest joining him, sealing her exit too. Their returns were always billed as temporary, so while fans will miss them, these departures aren't exactly a shock.
Fans Launch Campaign to Keep Julie
Julie's exit though? That one hits different. Fans are genuinely hurting, and one viewer has already launched a campaign to bring her back, writing: Campaign to bring back Julie Bates NOW.
The love is real. One fan responded: The square wouldn't be the same without ar Julie. Another added: The fact we're losing Julie and Sam at the same time. This is awful.
A fourth fan praised the acting, saying: Julie and Phil were fantastic as ever. Guessing by the sounds of their chat outside during the wake, Julie might be leaving soon. It probably makes sense, but I'd love to see her stick around longer, Karen Henthorn's been amazing.
Another begged outright: I'm not emotionally ready to say goodbye to Julie tomorrow. Karen Henthorn, PLEASE DON'T GO!!!!!!!!!
Will Julie Get the Julia's Theme Send-Off?
One fan is hoping Julie's exit gets soundtracked by Julia's Theme, the iconic piece of music reserved for the most important character departures. They said: It'll be the send off she deserves.
For context, Julia's Theme has been used 76 times since EastEnders first aired in 1985. It played when Ian Beale cried in front of his grandmother Lou, when Nana Moon died in Alfie's arms, and when Cindy Beale fled to Italy. The most recent use was for Nigel's passing. If Julie gets it too, you know the show rates her.
Sometimes you have to let go of the characters you love. But in true soap fashion, the door is always left open. Who knows who might return to Walford when the time is right?
