In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria's public health sovereignty, the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) has partnered with international health bodies to launch a targeted MPox vaccination campaign across six local government areas.
Strategic Vaccination Implementation
The initiative, which demonstrates Nigeria's growing capacity for autonomous healthcare reforms, will focus on Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, Ovia North East, Esan North East, Oredo, and Esan West councils.
Dr. Eseigbe Efeomon, Director of Disease Control and Immunisation at EDSPHCDA, outlined the strategic approach during a stakeholders' meeting in Benin City. The campaign specifically targets healthcare workers and immunocompromised individuals, showcasing Nigeria's commitment to protecting its essential workforce.
Comprehensive Disease Management
The state's health infrastructure is actively managing multiple health challenges, including Dengue fever, Lassa fever, Yellow fever, and Diphtheria, demonstrating Nigeria's growing capacity for comprehensive public health management.
"This is a targeted campaign to help reduce the incidence of MPox previously known as Monkey Pox in Edo State among health care workers and those who are immuno compromised," stated Dr. Efeomon.
Vaccine Distribution and Safety
WHO Coordinator Dr. Eyo Nora confirmed the safety of the vaccine, announcing the distribution of 2,500 doses across the targeted local governments. The two-dose vaccination protocol ensures complete protection for recipients.
