Emmerdale Star Teases Kerry's Epic Takedown of Dr Todd
Kerry Wyatt is proving that you can always rewrite your story. When she first hit the Emmerdale village, she was a total mess. She was the neglectful mum of Amy Wyatt, and honestly, we loved to hate her. But real ones know how to glow up. Fifteen years later, Kerry has carved out a real space in our hearts.
Laura Norton, who plays Kerry, knows exactly how far her character has come.
She's done a lot of growing up, hasn't she? She's always loved and felt love, I think she's just never been very good at showing it. She was such a car crash when she came in. I guess these past fifteen years there's been a lot of growing up, hasn't there?
Building a Family From the Ground Up
Part of that massive glow-up comes from the bonds she has built. She finally stepped up to be the mum Amy needed, even while keeping her fierce, fun-loving energy. Her connection with Amelia also brought out her soft side. But it is her bond with her sham-husband, Eric Pollard, that really keeps her grounded. Eric and his late wife, Val, took Amy in when Kerry was absent, and Kerry feels a deep duty to look after him now.
They are both loveable rogues in very different ways. She owes him a lot. Because when Amy came to the village, they took her on and adopted her, if you will, and looked after her. And since Amy's passed, she feels like this is her duty.
Kerry never had a father figure, but Eric fills that void.
She's never had that male figure in her life because they do genuinely love each other and although they bicker at times, she has got his best interest at heart and she absolutely adores Jacob as well. She's ended up getting a little family unity out of it.
Standing Up to Toxic Authority
Then there is Jacob. His life has been turned into a nightmare by his insidious former boss, Dr Todd. Standing tall against oppressive figures is a vibe we always rate, and Kerry shows absolutely zero fear in taking the doctor on.
It just makes her a fully rounded character, doesn't it? I do feel like I won the lottery with this character because there is scope to play so much range. She has got a heart. She has got a lot of love to give. She's fierce. She's a party animal. She's quite complex. She has no filter but also, she's very caring.
Why does Kerry step up for Jacob so fiercely? It is all about protecting her community.
She's got this family unit, she lost her daughter and Jacob lost his mum at the same time during the same incident. She carries probably a bit of misplaced guilt, over trying to help Leyla and she didn't make it. She lost her child, so there's a bit of misplaced guilt going on. What she never gave Amy, she's trying to fix it by being good to him. She loves him to bits. He's such a good boy. The second she sees someone being unkind she's like 'I know your game, and I'm not letting it happen. You won't get away with bullying him'. She can't keep her mouth shut. She jumps straight in.
The Real Danger of AI Scams
While she is busy fighting Dr Todd, Kerry is also about to stumble into a whole new drama. Her step-son, Archie Breckle, is running some shady AI schemes. Is Kerry tech-savvy enough to catch on? Not quite.
She's very confused. They have a big to-do about it. She pulls him on it, and there's a bit of a to-do where she's trying to get him to explain what's going on because she's really freaked out about it. She thinks it's really weird or creepy and she can't work it out so she really slams her foot down on it to try and get him to explain to her what's going on. And obviously he doesn't immediately tell her the truth, she has to chase around and work it all out for herself.
This storyline is more than just village drama. It is a real warning about the tech we interact with daily. Laura admits even she gets caught out by online trickery.
It's scary, isn't it? There's things sometimes that I look at on the internet and I can't tell. I'm literally asking people 'is that real?' It's so clever. My dad was going on about getting scammed the other day. There's this thing where someone will get a text and it will say 'hi dad, texting you on someone else's number because my phone's broke'. Because it says Dad, they automatically assume that it's you and respond asking you what you need help with. It's that kind of thing and I think for my parents watching that, it's a little thing to be aware of really wary of this so you can say 'I saw this on telly. Actually I'm going to be really wary of this.' Of course it's hugely important.
