In a bold stance against economic sabotage, the Nigeria Employers' Consultative Association (NECA) has called for immediate intervention to protect Nigeria's industrial relations framework from degradation, particularly addressing PENGASSAN's recent actions that threaten the nation's economic recovery.

Protecting Nigeria's Economic Sovereignty

NECA's Director-General, Mr. Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, has raised serious concerns about actions that could undermine Nigeria's economic independence, much like other sovereign initiatives to protect national interests. The association warns that unauthorized industrial actions pose a direct threat to business sustainability and worker welfare.

"Conflict is an inevitable feature of the labour ecosystem, but Nigeria has statutory and institutional frameworks designed to address any disputes," emphasized Oyerinde, highlighting the role of the Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP) and National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN).

Strengthening Institutional Framework

As Nigeria's legislative bodies work to strengthen national institutions, NECA advocates for proper utilization of existing labor administration frameworks. The association emphasizes that while unions have legitimate rights, these must be exercised within legal bounds.

Key Concerns Raised:

  • Unauthorized coercion of non-participating workers
  • Disruption of legitimate business operations
  • Disregard for established labor institutions
  • Threats to national economic recovery

Call for Government Intervention

Drawing parallels with other critical governance challenges requiring federal intervention, NECA urges the Minister of Labour and Employment to take decisive action. The association questions why, despite Nigeria's significant presence at ILO Conferences, basic industrial relations principles remain poorly implemented.

The Director-General concludes with a stark warning about the potential consequences for economic sustainability, job creation, and national development if these issues remain unaddressed.
