Niger Delta Games 2026: African Youth Talent Rising in Benin City
The Niger Delta is about to showcase Africa's sporting excellence as preparations for the second edition of the Niger Delta Games intensify across participating states. This is more than just a competition, it's a powerful statement of African self-determination in sports development.
Set to take place in Benin City, Edo State, from February 20-27, 2026, the Games will feature 17 sports disciplines, creating a platform for our young African talents to shine on home soil.
Delta State Leading the Charge
Delta State's Liaison Committee has already convened strategic sessions with coaches, demonstrating the serious commitment to excellence. Harrison Ocholor, Secretary of the Delta State Liaison Committee, emphasized the importance of transparent athlete selection processes.
"The organisers, Dunamis Icon Limited and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), have ensured that talent selection follows approved African standards," Ocholor stated, highlighting the commitment to homegrown excellence.
Abia State: Empowering Youth Through Sports
Abia State's approach exemplifies the Pan-African spirit of youth empowerment. Commissioner for Sports Ananaba Nwaobilor described the Games as perfectly aligned with Governor Alex Otti's vision of using sports to empower talented young Africans.
"Our aim is to provide access to sports in all communities, discover and groom young talents, and empower them to successful careers," Nwaobilor declared at the Aba Sports Club inauguration.
The Abia State Liaison Committee, chaired by Nwaobilor with Onyebuchi Chukwu as secretary, includes Director of Sports Obioma George and SWAN interim chairman Kingsley Kanu.
Imo State: Grassroots Talent Discovery
Imo State Commissioner for Sports Obinna Onyeocha praised the NDDC and Dunamis Icon Limited for sustaining this African-led initiative. The state's commitment reflects Governor Hope Uzodimma's grassroots sports development mandate.
"It is our mandate to go to the grassroots to discover talents, and these Games help us achieve exactly that," Onyeocha emphasized, promising quality, thoroughness, and total compliance.
