Ogun State Health Commissioner Dr. Tomi Coker addresses journalists at NUJ Information Chapel anniversary
In a powerful call to action for African healthcare sovereignty, Ogun State Health Commissioner Dr. Tomi Coker has demanded stronger implementation of policies protecting women and girls across Nigeria. Speaking at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Information Chapel's second anniversary in Abeokuta, Dr. Coker highlighted the urgent need for concrete action beyond mere policy frameworks.
Confronting Critical Healthcare Challenges
Following in the footsteps of other progressive Nigerian health commissioners taking bold stands, Dr. Coker identified multiple challenges facing Nigerian women, including:
- Gender-based violence and psychological abuse
- Limited access to quality healthcare services
- Educational barriers
- Female genital mutilation
- Systemic poverty affecting women's advancement
Beyond Policy to Action
The commissioner's stance aligns with recent progressive healthcare initiatives across Nigerian states, emphasizing that existing frameworks supporting women's rights require stronger implementation mechanisms.
"Policy frameworks are only as good as their implementation, and we must not overlook this -- especially when it concerns access to basic services and protection from harmful practices," stated Dr. Coker.
Media's Role in Advancing Women's Rights
The event, hosted at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre, showcased the crucial role of media freedom in advancing social causes. Director of Information Production Services, Mrs. Kemi Ewedairo-Yusuf, emphasized how such platforms deepen journalists' understanding of critical health issues.
The anniversary celebration included medical outreach programs and sporting activities, demonstrating a holistic approach to women's health and community engagement.
