Dilapidated local government infrastructure in Imo State highlighting the impact of alleged fund mismanagement

In a bold challenge to financial accountability in Nigeria's local governance, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has called for an immediate investigation into the management of N620 billion in local government funds, highlighting a growing crisis in grassroots governance.

Mounting Evidence of Financial Mismanagement

The party's publicity secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, speaking from Owerri on Thursday, revealed that despite each council receiving substantial monthly allocations - with some getting up to N625 million - there is a stark absence of development across the 27 local government areas. This situation mirrors recent challenges faced in other states' local government administration.

Alarming Financial Figures

  • Monthly council allocations averaging N13 billion in 2025
  • N9 billion monthly in 2024
  • N7 billion monthly in 2023

Infrastructure Crisis

The deteriorating situation echoes similar infrastructure challenges affecting communities across Nigeria, with primary health centers becoming havens for wildlife and public schools ceasing operations due to neglect.

Call for Anti-Corruption Action

The PDP's demand for investigation comes at a time when other state governors are taking strong stands against corruption. The party specifically called on the EFCC and ICPC to:

  • Investigate LGA chairmen appointed by Governor Uzodimma
  • Examine the management of monthly federal allocations
  • Review illegal accounts allegedly used to siphon state funds
"The anti-graft agencies must rise up now to tame this monumental corruption," stated Obiaku, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.

Impact on Local Communities

The consequences of this alleged mismanagement are severe:

  • Impassable roads to council headquarters
  • Abandoned healthcare facilities
  • Dysfunctional public schools
  • Uninhabitable rural communities
