Nigerian Editors Condemn Assault on Media Freedom in Niger State
In a bold challenge to democratic principles, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has strongly condemned Governor Mohammed Umar Bago's recent closure of Badeggi Radio in Niger State, marking a concerning trend in Nigeria's ongoing struggle against power abuse.
Constitutional Rights Violation
The Guild, through its leadership Eze Anaba and Onuoha Ukeh, emphasized that this action directly violates Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, demonstrating a troubling pattern similar to recent challenges to political independence in Nigeria's democratic landscape.
"This act of censorship and intimidation undermines the fundamental principles of a democratic society, where free press is essential for holding those in power accountable," stated the Guild's leadership.
Federal Government's Intervention
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, has highlighted that only the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) holds the authority to sanction broadcast stations. This intervention aligns with recent federal efforts to maintain regulatory compliance across Nigerian institutions.
Key Demands from the Guild:
- Immediate reopening of Badeggi Radio
- Proper investigation of alleged incitement claims
- Adherence to democratic principles
- Respect for press freedom and citizens' rights
The Guild warns that such arbitrary closures echo the dark days of military rule, urging media professionals to maintain ethical standards while defending their constitutional rights to operate freely.
