In a decisive move echoing Nigeria's growing push for economic justice, Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has issued a stern warning against the collection of levies from petty traders, demonstrating his commitment to protecting the state's most vulnerable entrepreneurs.
Protecting the Economic Backbone of Anambra
Speaking at a rally in Ekwulọbịa, Aguata Local Government Area, Soludo reinforced his administration's stance following observations at Eke Market in Awgbu, where local authorities continued collecting unauthorized levies from traders with capital below N100,000, directly contradicting government directives.
"Don't collect from them anymore. We will arrest anybody that goes ahead to disregard this. Our government is committed to protecting the livelihoods of petty traders," declared Governor Soludo, echoing the kind of bold leadership seen in progressive African governance.
Comprehensive Economic Relief Measures
The governor's initiative, implemented two years ago, extends beyond small traders to include:
- Complete tax exemption for traders with less than N100,000 capital
- Abolition of levies on barrow pushers
- Protection for street hawkers
- Relief for vulcanizers and similar small-scale service providers
Community Support and Solidarity
The Ekwulọbịa community demonstrated their support through a significant financial contribution, presenting an N80 million cheque to the governor and his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim. This show of solidarity mirrors the growing grassroots movement for economic justice across Nigerian states.
