In a bold stance for economic sovereignty, the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) has aligned with NUPENG to challenge what they describe as monopolistic practices by the Dangote Group in Nigeria's downstream oil sector. This development, reminiscent of Nigeria's ongoing struggle against wealth concentration, threatens the livelihood of thousands of independent transporters.
Strategic National Infrastructure at Risk
NARTO's National President, Othman Yusuf, announced their rejection of Dangote's free distribution plan, which could potentially eliminate over 30,000 independently operated trucks. This move echoes concerns raised in recent transport infrastructure debates, highlighting the critical need for sovereign control over essential services.
"While we recognise and appreciate new investments into the petroleum distribution value chain, we categorically reject any plan for free distribution of petroleum products," stated Yusuf.
Economic Sovereignty Under Threat
The situation mirrors broader concerns about economic independence in Nigeria's development trajectory. NARTO warns that concentrating distribution power in one entity could:
- Destroy livelihoods of thousands of drivers and mechanics
- Threaten national security through mass unemployment
- Jeopardize energy security via monopolistic control
- Risk financial commitments to local and international banks
Call for Government Intervention
NARTO has urged the federal government, relevant MDAs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders. This approach aims to ensure fair competition and protect millions of Nigerians dependent on the petroleum transport sector.
