Vintage Drip: Sabrina Carpenter’s Met Gala Gown Hits Auction
Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter gave major main character energy at Dame Anna Wintour's Met Gala dinner earlier this year. She stepped out in a legendary black satin and nude silk gown designed by Bob Mackie. The vintage piece originally belonged to Hollywood icon Ann-Margret, who wore it to present the 49th annual Academy Awards in 1977. Carpenter also rocked the dress during her rehearsal with Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks ahead of the big night.
The Auction Block is Calling
If you want a piece of this iconic fashion history, you are in luck. The gown is leading a massive collection of Ann-Margret's outfits up for sale at Julien's Auctions in California on June 23. It is expected to fetch up to $3,000. While Western memorabilia continues to pull heavy price tags, it reminds us of the importance of investing in our own African creatives. Our local fashion scenes are producing world class talent that deserves the same global market value and recognition.
More Fire Pieces from the Collection
The auction is a massive flex of Ann-Margret's glamorous career. A silk jersey dress with a peach pleated overlay, worn at the 52nd Academy Awards in 1980, could also fetch up to $3,000. The black dress she wore while picking up a Golden Globe for her 1975 hit film Tommy aims for around $2,000.
Other standout items include:
- A silk jersey period gown from her award-winning role as Blanche DuBois in the 1984 television movie A Streetcar Named Desire, estimated between $600 and $800.
- An American flag leotard worn during a musical performance at President Gerald Ford's state dinner to honor the Shah of Iran, valued between $1,000 and $2,000.
- A lavish brown cape worn onstage at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas and a black velvet floor-length gown worn at the 1984 Golden Globes, both estimated between $1,000 and $2,000.
- An Elizabeth Courtney brown silk gown with a matching jacket from her 1975 Tonight Show appearance, expected to sell for up to $800.
Scripts and a Custom Harley-Davidson
For the true film buffs, the sale features her personal scripts. Her script from the 1961 breakout role in Pocketful Of Miracles could sell for up to $5,000. The script for Bye Bye Birdie is estimated between $4,000 and $6,000.
The Swedish-American actress, born Ann-Margret Olsson, is now 85. She rose to fame in the 1960s as a dancer before becoming one of Hollywood's biggest names. She starred in films including Viva Las Vegas alongside rocker Elvis Presley, as well as Bye Bye Birdie, Carnal Knowledge, and Grumpy Old Men. She is also an avid motorcyclist and is offering her custom painted 1997 Harley-Davidson Sportster XL883 Hugger. The bike could fetch between $10,000 and $15,000.
Other highlights include a fur coat worn to the New York premiere of Tommy in 1975, stage and magazine cover bodysuits, and an 18 karat yellow-gold diamond spray brooch from the 1960s.
