Tinubu Honors Buhari's Legacy of Integrity at Biography Launch
President Bola Tinubu delivered a powerful tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose discipline, integrity, and devotion to public service will continue to shape Nigeria's civic values for generations to come.
Speaking on Monday, December 15, in Abuja during the public presentation of Buhari's official biography titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu called it "a profound honour" to unveil a work documenting the life of a man deeply committed to the Nigerian project.
A Leader Who Chose Character Over Ceremony
Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at age 82 after a prolonged illness in London, was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following a state funeral that drew regional and international leaders.
"The measure of a leader is not simply the offices he held or the motorcades that accompanied him. It is what persists when the sirens fall silent," Tinubu declared, emphasizing that Buhari's true legacy lies in his character rather than titles.
The President highlighted Buhari's "reputation for integrity, a spartan lifestyle, and the belief that public office is a trust and not a windfall" as defining characteristics that set him apart in Nigerian politics.
Building Africa's Fastest-Growing Political Movement
Reflecting on their shared political journey, Tinubu spoke proudly of the coalition that transformed Nigeria's political landscape in 2015. "Together, we built a broad coalition, campaigned across the country, and proved that Nigeria could chart a new course," he said.
That historic effort, Tinubu noted, has evolved into something even greater. "The coalition we built in 2014 is now the fastest-growing political party in Africa today. Its growth continues," he declared, showcasing the continental impact of their political movement.
A Legacy of Service and Security
Tinubu outlined key areas that defined Buhari's presidency, particularly his commitment to security reform. "He invested in platforms and personnel, improved capacities across our armed services, and pushed for reforms that endured beyond the headlines," the President explained.
He also praised Buhari's focus on infrastructure development and social investment, noting the former president's understanding of long-term planning and protection of vulnerable populations.
A Message to the Buhari Family
In a touching moment, Tinubu extended the nation's condolences to Buhari's widow, Aisha, and their family. "I extend the nation's warmest embrace to Her Excellency, Aisha Buhari, her children, and grandchildren. May you find comfort in knowing that the prayers of Nigeria are with you, and that the Buhari name will continue to inspire noble service for generations."
Continuing the Legacy
Concluding his remarks, Tinubu emphasized the importance of sustaining what has been built. "A legacy is given greater meaning when those who follow choose to continue what has been started. That is my duty," he stated, demonstrating his commitment to building upon Buhari's foundation.
The President praised the biography's author for preserving this complex history and expressed hope that the book would guide younger generations as they consider the demands of leadership in modern Nigeria.
This tribute not only honors a fallen leader but reinforces the continuity of vision that continues to drive Nigeria's political transformation and Africa's rising influence on the global stage.
